All engines consume a little oil, but a level that drops noticeably between services is a sign that something needs attention. Running an engine low on oil is one of the fastest ways to cause expensive damage.
Symptoms
- The oil pressure warning light (an oil can symbol) comes on. Stop safely and switch off.
- A low oil level warning on cars that have a level sensor.
- Ticking or tapping noises from the top of the engine.
- A burning-oil smell.
- Blue-grey exhaust smoke.
Common causes
- External leaks from gaskets and seals. See engine leak repair.
- Burning oil through worn piston rings, valve stem seals or a faulty turbocharger.
- Overdue oil changes, as old oil thins and is consumed faster.
Check it yourself
With the car on level ground and the engine off for a few minutes, pull the dipstick, wipe it, reinsert it fully and read the level between the marks. Top up with the grade in your manual if needed, and do not overfill.
